With your associate’s degree in human services from The New Community College, you’ll have a variety of career options. Upon graduation you may become:

  • an assistant at a non-profit providing community services, a foster care or adoption agency, or an after-school program
  • a social services aide
  • a recreation assistant in a hospital or nursing home
  • a classroom assistant in a preschool
  • a court liaison in a criminal justice organization

Job prospects for social and human service assistants are excellent. Nationally and in New York City, the number of social and human service assistants is expected to grow as programs expand for the elderly, disabled and homeless, as well as for substance abusers and families in crisis.

If you go on to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree, many more doors will open. You may go on to become:

  • a social worker
  • a researcher
  • a policy analyst
  • a health educator

Social workers specialize in serving a particular population, such as children or substance abusers. The social services sector is one of the three biggest industries in the city and one of the most stable in recessions.

The employment of health educators, individuals who help communities with disease prevention, is also expected to grow nationally.
